	ON REPEAT
	

	On repeat is a journey into the past, the very past. We look at history before history and even before story. In an ever shifting space we learn about the repetitive cycles of trial and error that shaped human life and helped create this strange species with its tedious habits and insatiable strive. While there’s certainly every reason to be afraid of what is about to come of this species in the future, we see how exemplary individuals have found their own strategies to cope and find a small space of joy during their short while on earth.&#38;nbsp;

This production is devised and co-created with the artistic team and the cast and marks Zarah’s first work that is produced outside of the Netherlands.


	On Repeat will premiere on 22nd April 2023 in Theaterhaus Jena in Germany.

	Children of Happyland is about the question of how much adaptive behaviour is healthy or rather: when is it time to show up for yourself and no longer shy away from confrontations?
When a group consists of a majority (or solely) of people who try to please the others, frictions and potential conflicts become invisible and a sort of fake-harmony is created: Happyland. Soon it becomes obvious that Happyland is a place of silent terror, where everyone is tiptoeing around each another in constant fear of being a burden. The characters are so unfamiliar with resistance that a tiny misunderstanding immediately erupts into a major catastrophe.


	Children of Happyland is a theatrical experiment that researches the full spectrum between conflict and harmony. Starting from a warlike dystopian mistrust, going to an exaggerated politeness in an extreme effort to uphold harmony, the performers eventually create an arena in which they can express themselves without losing their sense of care for their surroundings.  Maas Theater en Dans gave me the opportunity to research making theatre for the youngest audience in Spring 2021, with Help, ik zit op slot! (“Help, I am locked in!”) as the result of our three weeks in the rehearsal studio: a short associative performance for children aged 4 and up. 

Taking the theme of locks, keys and locked secrets, we’ve created a humoristic setting in which two handymen find a big and shiny, but unfortunately locked garbage bin. When the garbage bin makes sounds and starts playing music to them, they set their work aside and make it their objective to find a way to open this mysterious box. The deeper they dive into it, the more strange objects and sounds they discover, the more their world transforms and they with it. Like playing children they jump from one association to the next and find a new goal with each new impulse they unlock on their journey.&#38;nbsp;
Help, ik zit op slot! is a celebration of the imagination and a reminder (for the accompanying adults in the room) to approach even everyday life with curiosity.

This show is produced to fit into a small vehicle and to plug and play in kindergartens and classrooms.

	Being wrong and how to admit it&#38;nbsp;is a monologue that I’ve written myself for the acclaimed Dutch actress Kirsten Mulder. In this piece Kirsten embodies a political leader struggling to take responsibility and apologise for the general wrongness of her political beliefs and the thereupon based choices she has made in the past. The character cannot bring herself to put the apology into words and instead shifts into a defensive rant, giving the audience an impression of her inner conflicts and the many roles she has to cover: as a leader, a representative, the personification of “the system”, and eventually as a private human being. 

Being wrong and how to admit it calls for a more nuanced public debate and a more open political culture in which it would be easier to own mistakes and apologise for them, to forgive one another and then move on together - at the same time acknowledging the complexity that makes such a change seem almost impossible to achieve at times.

This piece marks an important step in my ongoing research about (female) leadership and responsibility.

Being wrong and how to admit it&#38;nbsp;premiered on 30th October 2020 at Het Nationale Theater, The Hague, was nominated for the BNG Bank Theaterprijs at the 2021 Dutch Theatre Festival and is currently&#38;nbsp;reprised in Dutch theatres.

Wholesale Destruction starts with the earth speaking to the human and ending their relationship, which to her has become increasingly abusive and one-sided. Unfortunately, as is often the case in the early stage of a break-up, human doesn't really get the cue, or maybe out of sheer helplessness decides to ignore earth's message altogether. In abstracted and playful scenes we see figures of our generation struggle to take action against this overwhelming crisis.

	They seem to be uncomfortable and annoyed by their own apathy, yet they cannot bring themselves to do anything, and so they get swallowed alive while still discussing which measurements they should take.
 
Wholesale Destruction deals with the dilemma of scale and both ridicules and empathises with humans who fail to get their act together facing the global climate crisis. With this piece I want to propose that in our deepest fantasies about the apocalypse we may seek an opportunity for a fresh start and to free ourselves from the multilayered burdens of the past; and thereby open up a door to imagine a new relationship with earth.

What started as a movement research at Fraslab (Frascati) on constantly switching between anecdotal images and abstract physical forms in order to engage and confuse the audience repetitively, became a full-length performance titled Change Position. To be able to work with as many clichés and readable images for the research as possible, I chose the topic of love and seduction as the central theme. Consisting of a solo, a duet and another solo, played in an arena-like 360° stage with one singular row of seats around it, Change Position is a mating ritual between two performers and involving the audience as well. One image creates the next and the piece unfolds in movement only, in an almost screensaver-like flow. By constantly alternating between stereotypical depictions of love and imaginative, more abstract portrayals of sexual attraction and seduction, the piece offers an associative journey in which the audience is invited to question and challenge their assumptions and fully dive into their own wild imaginations.

ZARAHBRACHT

I was born and raised in Hamburg (Germany), and studied theatre directing in Amsterdam (Academy for Theatre and Dance, AHK). 

I am a freelance director of devised work in mostly physical and visual theatre. Since 2022 I work as an intimacy coordinator for film and theatre, next to my directing projects.

I’m based in Amsterdam and available to work anywhere I can reach by train. I am fluent in German, Dutch and English and also understand and speak a bit of French.

	INTIMACY COORDINATION


Since early 2022 I’m actively working as one of the first intimacy coordinators in the Netherlands, in addition to my work as a director. I am very passionate about this new profession and proud to be a pioneer in it, together with my colleagues of IC NETHERLANDS. We strive to bring consensual bravery to Dutch rehearsal spaces, stages and film sets when working on depictions of intimacy.
In 2021 I co-founded the IC EUROPE network, which facilitates informal exchange between intimacy coordinators in European countries where the work is still a novelty.
I teach workshops on “uncomfortable vs unsafe working spaces in the arts”, which are always tailored to the specific needs and questions of the client.

Intimacy what?

An intimacy coordinator is an expert for creating content for film/tv and theatre containing simulated sex, intimate actions like kissing and touching, physical or mental exposure (e.g. depictions of self-harm or childbirth), and/or (partial) nudity. 
As intimacy coordinator I am an external professional whom you can call on for support in your process of creating a beautiful scene with consent of everyone involved. I bring techniques and tools that empower actors to speak up about their personal boundaries within which we then create choreography for the intimate scenes. I help open the conversation and bring clarity to the process, in order to safeguard professionalism, get everyone’s expectations aligned and enable actors to step out of their comfort zone and ultimately have fun with the challenge.
